How Jesus is Like the FedEx Logo. (John 5:39-40)
Listen Here:
Jesus is like the…Fedex logo? Yes, you read that right, and yes, He is.
Let’s talk about it.
-
I was listening to a podcast this week with Pastor Chuck Swindoll on the intentionality we must have when reading the Word of God, and in it Swindoll compared reading your Bible to the FedEx logo. And the more I thought about it, the more I let his words float in my mind, the more I came to realize that Jesus Himself is a lot like the Fedex logo.
Now you’re probably thinking, what do you mean by that? What is so special about this FedEx logo? And how does it relate to Jesus? How does it relate to our time in the Word?
Well I think it’s a coming of age moment, a monumental moment some might say in ALL OUR LIVES, we all have it, a moment where boys become men and girls become women, it is a moment unlike any other…indeed it is that moment when you come to realize that there is a hidden arrow in between the E and the X of the FedEx logo. See below:
Apparently it symbolizes quickness, precision, the pursuit of excellence, and tenacity in the face of adversity. The more you know. How about that???
Now if you haven't had that moment in your life yet, today is that day. Haha. I’m glad to have shared that moment with you. In all seriousness I don’t know how long in my life I went without noticing the arrow in the FedEx logo, but I went awhile. I mean it’s pretty easy to miss…you’re not necessarily looking for it. You just see the words FedEx and you’re like ‘Alright, my package is here’.
But it’s kinda crazy to think about. You could go and maybe you did go years and years without noticing the arrow in that logo. To think you could’ve sent and received FedEx packages upon Fedex packages, you could’ve seen that FedEx truck pass by your house a thousand times and you could see that logo over and over and over again and never notice the arrow. It’s crazy.
You see Scripture is full of FedEx arrows.
It’s full of life-giving arrows tucked away that you can easily miss! Without the eyes to see and the wherewithal to look intentionally, you can miss ‘em. That means if you read Scripture in a haste a few minutes before work or school, you can miss ‘em. If you’re reading just to get to the next chapter, you’ll miss ‘em. If you read the Scriptures just to check it off the list for the day in order to feel spiritually accomplished, you’ll miss ‘em. And if you read in order to get out what you want it to say, you’ll miss ‘em.
You’ll miss ‘em! See you could read Scripture for years, FOR YEARS, over and over and over again, and you could never notice the life giving FedEx arrows hidden ALL in them.
-
Moreover, to take it a step deeper, you could read Scripture your whole life, you could read everyday without fail, and you could miss that all of it points to one man: the Lord Jesus Christ.
Just like we could look at the FedEx logo all our lives and miss the arrow, we too could read the Bible our whole lives and miss that it all, every single word, points to Jesus.
Now you say ‘O Luke that’s not possible…it’s impossible to read the Scriptures and miss that it all points to Jesus.’
In the words of Lee Corso, ‘not so fast my friend’.
Look at the Pharisees. Jesus says to them in John 5:39-40,
‘You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, 40 yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life’.
The Pharisees, the most spiritual of all people, the religious elite so to speak, these people looked Jesus in the face, IN THE FACE, day after day, week after week, they looked the son of God in the face their whole lives, and yet they never worshiped Him as Christ. They never saw Him for He truly was. They never surrendered their lives to Him. He was never their Lord. He was never their daily bread, never their source of life.
It’s frightening to think that could be you.
You could go to the church service every Sunday, you could have a few Bible verses memorized - ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me’ - , you could do a devotional book, you could do all these things, you could look Jesus straight in the face, and never truly worship Him for who He is. You could do all these things without fully surrendering your heart to Him, and making Him Lord and Savior of your life.
Jesus is the Fedex arrow of Christianity.
You could spend your whole life calling yourself a Christian and miss the arrow of Christ who actually makes you identify as such.
Now there are many practical applications to this, and there are a few different types of people listening that I want to address:
First to the one who has not come to Christ, the one who has searched the Scriptures yet has not come to Jesus that they may have life…Or maybe instead of searching the Scriptures for life you’re searching the bed sheets, or your searching social media, scrolling and scrolling and scrolling, thinking the likes and comments bring life, or maybe you’re searching for a job; Which itself is not a bad thing but when it’s the only thing, when it’s what gives you life, what happens when you don’t get it? What happens when the people you’ve spent your whole life trying to please and find identity in are gone? What happens when the likes are low and the comments are gone? What happens when what you did in the sheets leaves you more empty than before? What happens then?
Friends only Jesus brings true life. Don’t go your whole life missing that. Don’t miss the arrow in the FedEx logo.
Now to the one who has come to Jesus, you can still miss all the different arrows in Scripture. Swindoll in his podcast was talking about the importance of spending ample, intentional time in the Word. He was saying without intentionally looking at the Fedex logo, you'll miss the arrow, and likewise without intentionally looking upon and into the Word of God, you’ll miss all the hidden arrows of meaning and life in it.
He was encouraging me and now I’m encouraging you to spend ample, intentional time in the Word. More than just a few minutes. I’m thinking a few hours. Why? Because Jesus can do so much with you showing up. And the more you do, the more intentional you are in the Word, the more time you spend in it, the more you will begin to take on its character and the more the hidden tucked away arrows will become visible to you.
I don’t want you to miss the hidden arrows of Scripture. There is so SO much there, and so many Christians, myself included, miss them because we just aren’t looking long and hard enough.
My prayer is like the Psalmist’s in Psalm 119:18, that the Lord would continually ‘open our eyes that we may behold wonderful things’, the hidden arrows so speak, of his law.
I love you all.
God bless.
