06 What is Love?
Listen Here:
Love and Humility. Two words that accurately describe the person of Jesus Christ and hopefully those that claim to follow Him. We talk so much in our churches about love, and for good reason. Jesus says in Mark 12:29 that the most important commandment is that we shall ‘...love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength’. In John 13 Jesus says that people will know we are His disciples by the way we love one another. Love is so very important.
And yet, though we know these things and discuss these things frequently in our churches and communities, we seem to miss and ignore that love is humility in action.
1 Corinthians 13:4 says that “Love is patient. Love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. Last part of that verse. Love is not..proud.
Well if you’re not proud you’re what? You’re Humble. And if you are proud you CANNOT what? Love. Without humility you cannot love.
Love cannot exist without the presence of humility!!!!
We cannot love if we are not humble. Humility begets love.
O how we miss this!!!! We talk of love but not the foundation in which it remains.
And Jesus’ love for us was rooted in his heart which was, as He described himself, ‘gentle and lowly’ (Matthew 11:29).
We cannot begin to love as Christ loved us until we first begin to humble ourselves before Him. The inflow of God’s love in our hearts can only come after the outflow of man’s flesh through humility. In other words, love and pride cannot co-exist.
Either God has all of man or love cannot abide within or come forth from the man. We must humble ourselves in order to love as Christ loved.
And that’s just it. So often we hear of the love of Jesus without talking about the humility of Jesus, and we speak on how we ought to love one another without talking about the importance of humility in order to do that. We ignore the importance of humility, whilst we amplify the importance of love.
We do this, and we don't realize that without humility we cannot love!
I cannot emphasize the connection between humility and love enough.
Love is rooted in humility.
Love is humility in action.
If you want to grow in love, grow in humility.
I love you guys!
God bless.
